Amazon Alexa is the voice app which lets you control any device that works with it. It’s a powerful system that can let you turn off lights in other rooms, start and stop the sprinklers, or adjust the thermostat all without leaving the couch! At the moment, there are 3 different products in the Amazon Alexa line that each let you do some pretty cool stuff.
Below, you can take a look at the Amazon Echo, Dot, and Tap. These brief overviews will help you get a sense of how they compare to each other.

The first in the line is the Amazon Echo. This impressive little device is both a powerful speaker and a central hub that can link with many different smart devices in your home and boasts a whole lot of other services as well. Let’s take a look at some of the things it can do!
This the top of the line Alexa enabled device. Its 360 degree speaker lets you stream music, listen to audiobooks, do search queries, or even place orders. And you can use it completely via voice command.
All you have to do is start your command with the signal phrase “Alexa” and the Echo will start listening. It works with other apps as well so that you can order pizza, get an Uber, check the news, check traffic reports, and even check your calendar.
It’s one of the handiest home companions you can have. Especially because it is compatible with so many other home automation devices from brands like Samsung, Philips, WeMo, and more. Control your entire home by giving voice commands to your Amazon Echo!
Of the 3 devices we are covering in this article, the Echo is definitely the most expensive. That’s because it can do the most and it’s constantly “learning.” That is, they’re always adding new services and functions which ensures you’re staying top of the line.
For that price, you get a complete all in one device that doesn’t require any additional equipment. However, for some people, it might be a little more than you actually need. So before you commit to the echo, check out the more budget friendly Dot and Tap options below.
This is the super budget friendly version of the Dot. It gets its cute name from being extremely small (just over an inch high). And it has plenty of perks. Take a look at some of the features below.
One of the best things about the Dot is that, because it works with the Amazon Alexa app, it can do anything that app can do. So in terms of services and features, it’s right up there with the much more expensive Amazon Echo.
That is, you can still order your pizza, manage your calendar, check the news, and control your smart home appliances like thermostats, security, and lights using simple voice commands. And you only pay about a third of the price.
It also has the same far field microphones that the Echo has which allows it to pick up your voice even when you’re on the other side of the room!
While it is very budget friendly and can do a lot, you need to buy additional equipment to use it which kind of cuts into the savings you were hoping to get. While it does have its own speaker, it’s not nearly as good as the one on the Echo. You’ll definitely want to pair it with some better speakers if you really want to enjoy music with it.
While the Dot is meant to be the smaller, more affordable version of the Echo, the Tap was designed to be the portable option. So it’s not really scaled back in functionality and features as much as the Dot is. Let’s take a look at what it can do:
Of all the options on the list, this is the only one that is battery powered. And that means you can take it with you on the go. A single charge can last as much as 9 straight hours so you can get quite a bit of life out of it.
As for functions, it works with Alexa so you get the same features that you’ll find on the Dot and the Echo. And it’s able to connect via wifi or Bluetooth to your phone or tablet so you can access everything you have on your other devices as well.
With the dual speaker set up, it can provide some great sound. It doesn’t quite stand up to the Echo here but for a portable speaker, it’s definitely enough to get the job done. It’s really ideal for keeping in the car or taking with you on camping trips or picnics.
There are 2 main drawbacks here. First, it’s not completely hands-free. In order to give a voice command, you have to press a button to activate the microphone. Secondly, the speakers here aren’t quite as powerful as the Echo, although definitely better than the Dot.
After reviewing all three, it’s pretty clear that the Echo is the most impressive one on the list. It’s a complete, all in one device that has no shortage of cool features and functions. The 360 degree speaker creates the best sound experience and it’s got the best listening ability to hear your every command.
However, if price is a major factor for you, the Dot might be more appealing. You still get quite a bit of the functionality of the Echo without spending as much. You are just sacrificing sound quality and the ability to use the device on its own.
For those who want all the features of the Echo while they’re on the go, the Tap is your best bet. It’s the only one that is battery powered. However, the speakers aren’t as good as the Echo and it doesn’t have totally hands-free command (something both the Dot and the Echo offer).
So, for all around purposes, go with the Echo. If you’re particularly searching for something specific like affordability or portability, check out the Dot or the Tap.
